Braces are devices that gradually move teeth or adjust underlying bone. Most children get braces between the ages of eight and 14, but we recommend that your child has a consultation by the age of seven. There are many more options today for kids than there were even ten years ago. Today, braces don't have to be an embarrassing rite of passage; in fact, some kids say that getting braces today is a fun fashion statement!
So what kinds of braces are available for your teenager? There are several:
1.  Metal Braces: Metal braces are available in silver or gold and they are very strong. They have a variety of accent colors, which will give your teen some fun choices.
2.  Lingual Braces: For those who are shy about having anyone notice their braces, the lingual braces might be just the thing. These braces adhere on the backside of the teeth so that they are not visible.
3.  Clear, Removable Aligners: A bit more expensive, these braces are very convenient. You can take them out and clean them, they are clear and unnoticeable, and there is a minimum of discomfort. Learn more about Invisalign® at Richard A. Mandelaris, DMD Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics
4.  Ceramic Braces: These braces are not as invisible as the clear ones but are more aesthetically pleasing than metal braces. While they aren't quite as strong as metal braces, they come in varying levels of transparency and do not stain.
5.  Smart Brackets: These are the latest in orthodontia and they actually collect information that could shorten the overall time a patient must wear braces.
